WASH Interventions through Integrated Programming

Project goal
While CAAP has not implemented standalone WASH projects, WASH interventions have been integrated into NFI projects in Erer Woreda (Sitti Zone) and Jarati Woreda (Afder Zone) to maximize impacts in community resilience.

Achievements
- Emergency WASH Interventions in Erer Woreda:
- Water Quality Monitoring: Regularly monitored water quality, ensuring compliance with WHO standards, providing safe water supply for 8,360 individuals through regular testing and chlorination.
- Water Infrastructure Development: Extended 1.8 km of water pipelines and installed 3 additional water points, improving access to safe water for 8,360 individuals.
- Capacity Building: Trained 14 Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOs) on the maintenance and operation of the water scheme.
- Sanitation Facilities: Constructed 8 blocks of gender-segregated latrines (32 stances) for 1,600 individuals, along with distributing latrine cleaning kits to local WASH committees for ongoing maintenance.
- IEC Materials: Developed and disseminated 150 culturally appropriate IEC materials to promote hygiene and sanitation practices.
- Hygiene Promotion: Trained 20 hygiene promoters (10 women and 10 men) to promote key hygiene practices, and conducted hygiene promotion campaigns and mass mobilization, reaching 10,000 individuals to improve knowledge and behavior regarding safe water storage and handwashing.
- Distribution of WASH NFIs: Distributed essential hygiene items, including water containers, soap, and hygiene supplies, to 2,000 households, enhancing hygiene practices and reducing disease risks. Also, provided women’s clothing items, including underwear and sheety/drya cloth, to 3,000 women and girls, ensuring dignity and improved personal hygiene.
- Emergency WASH Services in Jarati Woreda:
- Rehabilitation of Water Sources: Rehabilitated two nonfunctional hand-dug wells, restoring clean water access for 1,000 flood-affected individuals.
- Water Quality Monitoring: Regular monitoring and testing to ensure safe drinking water for the communities.
- Capacity Building: Trained 14 WaSCHo members in water point management and operation, ensuring the sustainable use and maintenance of rehabilitated water sources.
- Sanitation Facilities: Constructed five blocks of improved latrines (4 stances each), equipped with handwashing stations, benefiting 1,000 individuals.
- Latrine Cleaning Kits: Distributed cleaning kits to maintain sanitation facilities.
- WASH NFIs: Delivered essential hygiene items to 1,500 households, improving household hygiene practices.
Impact
These integrated WASH interventions in Erer and Jarati Woredas have significantly improved access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene for vulnerable populations. The projects enhanced community resilience by addressing immediate needs and promoting sustainable improvements in health and living conditions. The PDM surveys showed high satisfaction levels, with beneficiaries reporting improved water access, better sanitation facilities, and enhanced hygiene practices. These efforts contribute to long-term community resilience and well-being in the Somali Region.
